Bag your own compost - £1 a bag (40 litres) or buy recycled timber from Green Estate

The Green Estate recycling business operates throughout South Yorkshire. There are two main aspects to the business; green waste and timber recycling

Soil improver

Green waste is processed and recycled into a soil-improver, which is available for collection. Bulk-loads are available, or there is a bag-your-own facility, where you can buy Green Estate soil-improver for £1.00 per bag. Each heavy-duty compost sack holds around 40 litres.
Reclaimed timber shop
The timber shop is open to the public from 10am to 4pm, Wednesday through to Friday, and from 9am to 4pm on Saturday. Cash and Card payment methods available.
Stock varies but generally has:
  • de-nailed, separated timber from the deconstructed pallets in varying sizes
  • whole pallets for you to upcycle at a cheaper rate
  • cut-to-length service available
  • home delivery (ask in-store for available dates and rates)

Have you paid your membership fees by post but not heard from us yet?

We've recently received an empty envelope from the post office which we suspect contained money to pay for membership fees following our recent membership drive. Unfortunately the contents of the envelope had been removed leaving us unable to identify the sender. If you have by any chance sent in membership fees by cash but not heard from us then do please get in touch via our email

Sunday 15th April - Clear up and cake sale

skip hire servicesThis is your opportunity to get rid of unwanted items from your plot. Anything which won't decompose can go in our skip.

The skip will be inside the site near the middle gate from the morning of Friday 13th April and will probably be there for a week. If you happen to see anyone dumping household items in it please challenge them.

Please could members pick up any rubbish generally around the site. We do have some litter picking sticks if you wish but please take care with sharp or difficult to handle items. There will be rubbish bags and litter pickers available.

The City Council is unable to fund the cost of a large skip this year so we are having to pay £195 from HCAA funds contributed by our members. If you haven't joined HCAA please do join - it will help us fund our annual expenses such as this skip and hedge trimming!

Cake Sale at Ken's plot

Possibly more enjoyable than getting rid of unwanted rubbish is eating cake! We're asking members if they would kindly make a cake or buns and take them to Ken's plot from 10 am onwards to help raise funds. Look out for the signs to Ken's plot which is just below the school field. Tea and coffee will be provided free - we ask for donations for the cake to help us raise funds. Bring your own mug and plate if you wish. Also bring your friends and family too, the more the merrier...

The newly acquired HCAA gazebo will be up too to provide a bit of protection should it rain.

Sunday 13th May Plant Sale at High Storrs School

We have booked space for our HCAA tables at High Storrs School and all we need to do is fill the table tops with plants for sale - which is where all our members come in! If you can provide any veg or herb plants please bring them along - please see the attached sowing guide which is helpful if you're unsure of the timing to plant for things to be ready by mid May. The most popular plants are the things we all like to grow ourselves - various beans, salads, strawberry plants, courgettes, cabbages, tomatoes - and of course freshly picked rhubarb.
The sale starts at 10 to finish by 1'o'clock but the majority of sales are done by midday. You can bring plants along throughout the morning or arrive from just after 9 a.m. when the tables will be setting up...
Hope to see you.

Ken Askew, Sec. HCAA
